Deep Voll Ravine, April, 2006
"An enchanted dell," the "Depe Voll" ravine played a very prominent role in the history of Wyckoff. It is likely that this natural wonder was created in prehistoric times by a melting glacier that pushed, scraped and carved thousands of tons of rock and soil down the hill toward what is now Goffle Road. The ancestors of the Lenape Indians are thought to have first settled in the area about ten thousand years ago, and the Blauvelt family established a mill there after European settlers arrived. What remains of Deep Voll Ravine is now to be carved up into a subdivision built by Barrister Home Construction. Full details are on the Save the Ravine website.

Russell Orchards in bloom, April, 2006
Russell Orchards, also known as Russell Farms, is named after Edward Russell, who purchased a farm in 1906 (the farm was established more than 125 years ago). Russell Orchards opened its popular retail stand in the 1950s. The original house can be seen at the corner of Russell and Sicomac avenues. Barrister Home Construction, which is in the process of purchasing the property, is expected to propose a subdivision later this year or in 2007.

Budding tree canopy at Maple Lake
A 24-acre parcel that lies west of Cedar Hill Avenue, Maple Lake is between Canterbury Lane and the Township's border with Midland Park. The lake is no more (it was drained by the developer), but the tract is returning to its original state. The Cooper's Hawk, a state endangered species, nests at the site, and the wood turtle, a species which favors pristine wetlands, has also been documented at Maple Lake. This wildlife, and wetlands, may reduce development at Maple Lake, but are not enough to stop it.
